In order to diversify the energy mix, the Organization of the CEPGL for Energy of the Great Lakes Countries (EGL) with the technical assistance of the ISOR (Ireland), in 2013 developed the Terms of Reference of an investigative study of geothermal potential at the common border of the three member countries of CEPGL and submitted them to the European Union. The latter approved them and agreed to finance the project.
The objective of the project is to identify geothermal resources in the Great Lakes region and the long-term use of these resources to the production of electric power or for other uses.
The project implementation will be carried out in two phases:
Phase 1, which is:
• the realization of geothermal sites reconnaissance studies at Nyangezi, Uvira and Kinanira Kavimvira in the DRC;
• the realization of site surface exploration studies at Ruhwa Burundi, Bugarama in Rwanda and in DRC for one of the sites that will be chosen based on the results of reconnaissance surveys;
Phase 2, which consists of a drilling deep exploratory well (1400 to 1800) on one of the sites to be chosen among the three.
The geothermal site reconnaissance surveys in the DRC have been finalized during the first half of 2014 and the site of Kavimvira was identified as the best site in terms of water temperature on the surface, accessibility and security site area.
The surface exploration studies Ruhwa sites (Burundi), Bugarama (Rwanda) and Kavimvira (DRC) have been finalized during the first quarter of 2015. For the moment, the consultant is negotiating with a private operator in charge of Drilling for the study of the temperature gradient on the three sites.
The results of this study will determine the site that will be subject to a deep drilling for exploratory wells.

The result shows that the Consultant has not been able to identify appropriate sources of evidence for the production of electrical energy.
